The Ugandan online news portal The Nile Post reports on the official opening and handover ceremony of Fairventures Worldwide Uganda to the Good Forest Uganda Foundation.

After the staff of our former country office in Indonesia founded the independent Good Forest Indonesia Foundation last year, Uganda has now taken the same step: the Good Forest Uganda Foundation, or GFU, was officially established just recently.

As the rain returns to Uganda, thousands of young trees are taking roots. During the tree planting season from September to November, we are aiming to plant over 200,000 trees across over 350 hectares of land.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the iffland.hören store in Waiblingen, (South Germany), donations have been collected for Fairventures Worldwide since June. The store in Korb also joined the campaign.

challenges we’ve faced

Running a Fairventures office for 10 years in Indonesia has led us to reflect extensively on our reforestation journey. Late in 2023, we supported our Indonesian team in establishing their own organisation, the “Good Forest Indonesia” (GFI) Foundation.

The rapid demographic growth in Uganda drives an increasing demand for firewood and agricultural land, putting enormous pressure on the country’s forests. As a result, Uganda’s forest cover has been shrinking at an alarming rate, threatening both biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities.

Fairventures Worldwide Uganda together with TREEO hosted a workshop on Carbon Sequestration at the Timber Innovation Center (TIC).The TIC aims to promote and advance sustainable timber construction in Uganda and wider East Africa. It was built by Fairventures Worldwide and opened in June 2023.

The ChanceMaker Foundation has been supporting the ChanceMakers of Fairventures Worldwide (FVW) since 2022, linking the two organisations in a long-term partnership that is reflected in the way they support each other and in their mutual understanding. On March 21st, Fairventures Worldwide Uganda celebrated the International Day of Forests by hosting an engaging Quiz Night. 

At the end of February, Fairventures Worldwide participated in an event organised by the Catholic Diocese of Hoima in the Western Region of Uganda. Our local team presented our reforestation work in Uganda and highlighted why trees play a key role in the fight against climate change.

In mid-December, students and an editor from the Ludwigsburger Kreiszeitung took part in a digital encounter with Monalisa. Monalisa is one of the five climate witnesses in our educational project Climate Stories.

In 2023, Fairventures and Good Forest Indonesia (GFI) launched the Patchouli Pilot Project in Sumur Mas village, Gunung Mas regency. This initiative is our response to the need for a short-term income solution in GFI's agroforestry program.

At the end of September 2024, a sponsored run took place at the Franziska-Hoell-School (FHS) in Bühlertal, Germany – with an impressive result. Over 3,000 euros were raised, which have now been donated to Fairventures Worldwide and will benefit smallholder farmers in Uganda and Indonesia.

When Fairventures Worldwide opened its Uganda office in 2018, the team was quite small. Led by Patience Naamara, one of the first hires was a forestry graduate; James Thembo. Focused on planting trees and building meaningful relationships with communities, their work was challenging yet vital.

Our project, Climate Stories, brings together students in Germany and young people from the Global South. The goal is to make the climate crisis more relatable by allowing those affected to share their stories, concerns, and hopes, motivating and encouraging young people to take action through their engagement.
