The Current Situation
Uganda has one of the youngest and fastest growing populations in the world, with 46% of Ugandans being under 15 years old. This leads to an increased need for energy and land for agriculture.
Driven by these needs, the forest cover in the country continues to decrease, with a dramatic reduction from 24% in 1990 to 9% as of 2015. Reforestation efforts need to increase significantly to counteract this development.
Our Work in Uganda
Through our country program titled “Lasting Solutions”, we address these challenges by reforesting degraded land. We work together with many smallholder farmers and local institutions like churches, schools and NGOs, providing opportunities for long-term, sustainable income through our holistic agroforestry approach. We promote and integrate indigenous tree species and agroforestry in the farmer’s land, reducing their dependence on natural forests for firewood and building materials.
Under the Mass Timber Construction East Africa (MTCEA) project, we also promote the use of mass timber engineered wood technologies both in the construction and timber sector to create a sustainable timber industry.
