Moses Mumbere : Growing a Future with Agroforestry in Bwera

13. October 2026|In Farmer Stories, Uganda

Close to the city of Bwera in Uganda, Moses Mumbere and his family manage eight acres of land where they grow coffee, bananas, beans, maize and groundnuts, alongside keeping goats and chickens.

Through his collaboration with Fairventures, Moses took part in trainings on farm planning and agroforestry. He learned how to make better use of the available land, which tree species can support his crops and how shade trees can help protect coffee and banana plants.

Today, trees are an integral part of his farm. They provide shade, support the growth of his crops and supply firewood through regular pruning. Moses has also dedicated part of his land to timber trees, which he sees as an investment in his family’s future.

Sharing knowledge with the community

The changes on his farm have attracted the interest of other farmers in the area. Moses now welcomes people from his community who come to learn more about his approach to farm planning and agroforestry.

For Moses, planting trees is not only about improving his farm today. The timber trees he is growing are also intended to provide income in the future and help him cover his children’s school fees.

The training sessions for smallholder farmers in and around the town of Bwera, which Moses participated in, were made possible thanks to financial support from the State Parliament and the Ministry of State of Baden-Württemberg through the Stiftung Entwicklungs-Zusammenarbeit Baden-Württemberg (SEZ), under its bwirkt! Ausland funding programme.

You can find an overview of all supported activities here.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for this support, which helps smallholder farmers like Moses strengthen their livelihoods and income opportunities while sustainably integrating trees into their farming systems.
