Why he chooses agroforestry<\/b><\/h3>\n

In farming, Sukrin combines short-term plants like chilli and vegetables with medium- and long-term plants like cacao and Sengon, a fast-growing tree species. According to him, this practice improves field productivity and contributes to the ecosystem balance. Moreover, if the price of one commodity goes down, the other crops will cover the loss. This is what convinced him that agroforestry is the right step.<\/span><\/p>\n

With his experience in cocoa farming from a young age, Sukrin has planted around 3,000 cocoa seedlings in the last planting season and is targeting up to 5,000 seedlings in 2024. According to Sukrin, cocoa has great potential as a commodity. One hectare of cacao field, if maintained with great care, can produce up to three tons of cacao per year. \u201cFor me, cacao is more than just a business, it is an investment in a better tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides cacao, Sukrin also plants tree species like Jengkol, Petai, and Sengon. According to him, these plants produce different crops and resources, and help improve the quality of the surrounding soil and air. \u201cI believe that with agroforestry, we can achieve prosperity in the future. We can also participate in improving and changing the climate for the better.\u201d Sukrin added.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image media=”12352″ media_width_percent=”100″ uncode_shortcode_id=”210693″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”137353″]<\/p>\n

Overcoming challenges<\/b><\/h3>\n

As a farmer, Sukrin faces a number of challenges, such as the procurement of seeds and a lack of capital. However, he does not give up. His collaboration with Good Forest Indonesia (GFI) – Fairventures Worldwide\u2019s partner in Indonesia – provides him with the knowledge and skills he needs. \u201cBefore, I planted crops without sufficient knowledge. Therefore, I am thankful that GFI can provide knowledge from land preparation to business practices\u201d said Sukrin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sukrin\u2019s vision is very clear. He wants to see future generations enjoy the result of what is planted today. He believes that by implementing agroforestry and cultivating the short-, medium- and long-term plants simultaneously, the economic welfare of farmers will increase and they will also contribute to the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our responsibility as farmers to pass on a healthy earth to our children and grandchildren.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sukrin is the real example that agriculture is not only about material gain, but also about responsibility towards the environment.
